Saito FA-45MKII Cam gear experiment Part 1
I purchased a Saito FA-45 MKII from eBay. This is a very nice engine that came complete with box, most of the tools, and all of the paperwork normally shipped with these engines. One piece of paper that came with it was EXTREMELY interesting to me anyway, the original bill of sale! This engine was purchased from Circus Hobbies in Las Vegas NV in May of 1988! Very cool. Anyway, this engine really didn't need me to do anything to it. It was pretty clean and felt like it would run as it was. It was a bit stiff, the feeling of an engine that has not been run in years. So being me, I decided to completely disassemble it and inspect the bearings. This was one of the easiest tear downs ever. Really nothing was stuck or gave me any issues at all. The bearings were a bit gummed up and after cleaning I decided to just install them again. I can always replace them later if need be. And then it hit me. Why not try something I have wanted to do for a very long time? I have been wanting to convert a 45 MKII to a 45S for quite a while. To my knowledge a FA-45S is just a 45 with a cam gear of a 50 or 56. The 56 was not available when the 45S came out and real factual information on Saito engine history is a bit difficult to obtain. The best I could piece together from other forums and folks that have done this was that the 45S had a 'hotter' cam. I set out to find a cam gear for a Saito 56 and within a few hours I had one coming from a fine RCG member here. I also happen to have a 45S and a 50 that I can take parts from to begin the comparison. That is exactly what I have in Part 1 here. I took the cam gear housing, cam gear, followers, and push rods out of my 50 and compared them to the 45MKII parts. The engine was still disassembled so this was a good time to take some initial pictures. As you can see there are several parts that will need to be swapped out. 1. Cam gear 2. Cam gear housing 3. Cam followers 4. Push rods. I will not be installing the push rod tubes for this experiment and I will keep the rocker covers off too just to keep it a bit simpler. So my plan here is to reassemble the 45MKII with all original parts. I will run it and take some tachometer readings; shooting videos too of course. I will use the same APC 11x6 propeller and Morgan's Omega 10% fuel for all runs. Once the 56 cam gear arrives I will compare it to the one from my 50 and see if they are the same. If not I will put the cam gear, housing, and all other parts from the 50 onto the 45MKII and run it. Then I will install the 56 cam gear and repeat.
